San Valentino Torio

The town

The toponym – as well as the fame of the lovers village – derives from a relic (right arm) of the saint, martyr of Terni; it is preserved in a silver urn of the XVI century, donated by the dukes Capece Minutolo to the church of St.Giacomo, located in the center of the city. The saint is considered the patron of the lovers because he brought back the eye sight to a girl, allowing her to marry a Roman noble man.

Placed in the plain crossed by the Sarno, between the Vesuvius and the Lattari mountains, San Valentino is inhabited since the prehistory, as the vast ditch necropolises testify, datable from the IX to the VI century B.C.The presence of a rustic villa anterior to the I century A.D., instead, shows another settlement from Roman times that exploited the vast territory for agricultural purposes; till today this is a decisive aspect of the economy of the small center, also based on the food packaging industry.
